CULTURAL EVENTS, GALLERIES AND EXHIBITIONSOUT AND ABOUT WITH THE CULTURE VULTURES - WRITTEN BY A KEEN EL MEMBER AND HOST One of the things which makes EL stand out from other social clubs is the sheer range and diversity of its events schedule, and nowhere is this more evident than in its extensive programme of both evening and weekend trips to various cultural attractions in and around the capital. During the last 12 months EL has organised events at venues as unusual and wide-ranging as Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Somerset House, The Royal Academy, The National Portrait Gallery, The Wallace Collection, Buckingham Palace, the Millennium Dome, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the Royal Institute of British Architecture, the Dali Experience, Sotheby's, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Library. And it's far from being a case of visiting stuffy old buildings crammed to the rafters with obscure art. We've been to some of the newest attractions in London, and in amongst these events we've been treated to fashion shows, talks, champagne cocktails, performance art, and even live DJ's. Many of our cultural events include free admission to the venue, and they always provide a good opportunity to mix with regular and new members, and usually include the option for either a pre- or post-event meal or drinks. We already have a great variety of cultural events lined up for the coming months. Following hot on the heels of our trip to see the new exhibition "Impressionism: Painting Quickly in France" at the National Gallery, we will be visiting both the British Museum, which has just unveiled its new Norman Foster designed Great Court, and the Turner Watercolour exhibition at the Royal Academy, as well as paying return visits to Somerset House, to enjoy the atmosphere surrounding the temporary ice rink which is currently being installed there. And later in the New Year we'll be back at Somerset House to view "The Treasures of Catherine the Great" at the Hermitage Rooms, London's new branch of the famous State Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg. So keep an eye out for details of these and other great days out in forthcoming editions of the programme. Look forward to seeing you there! |
